Sensitive Teeth
Are you experiencing tooth sensitivity or pain when biting into a frozen dessert, drinking hot liquid or even brushing? If so you very likely have Sensitive Teeth!
Causes for Sensitive Teeth
Sensitive teeth can be caused by a variety of things. This includes:
- Worn tooth enamel
- Exposed tooth roots
- Tooth decay
- Cracks in the teeth
- Brushing too hard thus exposing the roots
- Gum recession which can occur naturally
- Gum disease
Worn tooth enamel occurs when the enamel that covers the teeth begins to erode and the underlying layer of dentin is exposed. The dentin contains pores that run through to the tooth's nerve resulting in sensitivity and pain when consuming something hot or cold. The level of sensitivity can vary too, meaning you can experience anything from mild to severe discomfort.
Treatment for Sensitive Teeth
3M™ Vanish™ XT Extended Contact Varnish
Dr. Griffith uses the 3M™ Vanish™ XT Extended Contact Varnish for protecting exposed, sensitive root surfaces. It is a site-specific, light-cured, durable coating that forms an immediate layer of protection to relieve tooth pain and sensitivity. It releases fluoride, calcium and phosphate onto the teeth and offers extended protection for up to 6 months by creating a protective barrier against demineralization and acid erosion.
Dr. Griffith may recommend a more permanent solution such as bonding. Additionally, he may suggest using a special desensitizing toothpaste and a toothbrush with soft bristles.
